24-Hour Biennial Cycle

Active members of the New York State Bar must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of approved continuing legal education every biennial period. The biennial cycle is based on each attorney's registration date with the bar and varies from attorney to attorney — all 24 hours must be completed by the end of your specific two-year cycle.

Biennial Cycle

Your CLE biennial period spans two years from your registration date with the New York State Bar. The cycle varies by attorney. You must complete all 24 hours by the end of your specific biennial period.

Mandatory Categories

4 hours Ethics & Professionalism, 1 hour Diversity/Inclusion/Bias Elimination, 1 hour Cybersecurity/Privacy/Data Protection, and 18 hours Areas of Professional Practice (general).

Newly Admitted Attorneys

First 2 years: 32 total hours required (16 skills, 6 ethics, 6 practice management, 3 cybersecurity, 1 diversity). After 2 years, revert to standard 24-hour biennial requirement.

Online CLE Accepted

New York accepts fully online CLE from accredited providers. No cap on online credits — all 24 hours may be completed through self-paced online courses.

No Carryover

Excess CLE credits cannot be carried over to your next biennial period. Hours earned beyond the 24-hour requirement count only toward your current cycle.

Credit Formats

Credits can be earned through live seminars, on-demand video courses, webinars, and self-study programs from accredited providers. All formats are accepted by the New York State Bar.

No Carryover Policy

Excess credits earned beyond the 24-hour requirement cannot be carried over to your next biennial period. Hours only count toward the cycle in which they are earned.
